I am in the process of obtaining a major in Sociology (after being out of academia for 20 years). I am in a beginning Sociology class and am extremely interested in pursing the topic of Social Mobility over the next few years. I would like to start with some simple, stage appropriate research. At this point, an introduction to research in this area is what I'm seeking, but with the idea that I can build on it over the years to come. Any suggestions on any early research ideas??? I have some thoughts, but am having difficulty identifying an intial research question.

Erzsi, Thanks for your comment. As for research topics -- you'll want to allow your interests develop through your studies. A small piece of advice might be helpful -- pay attention to the social mechanisms through which processes of interest take place. If you develop an interest in social movements, then investigate the mechanisms through which mobilization and escalation take place. If you're interested in social mobility, then try tracking the mechanisms that prevent mobility for some people in some societies and accelerate mobility in other circumstances.
