The standard used to judge is very "liberal". It didn't watch for :
- ethnic nationalism, the Right of people to have their own country (Israel=Jewish, Germany=Germans)
- protection of Property, Right of Property Owner to keep their own property (from taxation, from environmental regulations, Gun Rights, Landowner-Lender, Shopowner-Customer, etc)

You're seeing authoritarian tendencies more and more because they appear to be more and more effective in this era. Increasing authoritarian tendencies and advocacy is coming from many different sources, some on the Right, but many on the Left too. To prove this, all one has to do is look at many mainstream Twitter pages supporting violence against anyone who supports voting Trump. For example, look at this Twitter thread from Denis Ivan Perez, a major sports reporter in the Bay Area:

Look at this Twitter thread from Brian Amadio, a big-time Tech Entrepreneur at StitchFix:
https://twitter.com/BrianAmadio/status/1317598926699069441

Here, Brian Amadio, a major tech entrepreneur, is endorsing wanton violence against anyone who supports a political candidate he doesn't like. That is the essence of authoritarianism. Meanwhile, Twitter has banned Phil Anderson simply by popular demand.

Phil Anderson was doing nothing but standing still with a pro-Trump sign, and he was the one banned by Twitter.
