"Every generation blames the one before..." Humans evolve slowly while change can erupt suddenly, to the effect that we experience what Toffler called future shock. When pace of change becomes more than people can (or want to) grasp, they may retreat into a more comfortable and familiar conservatism, some not fully understanding the gravity of that course, or if they do, re-embracing attitudes; beliefs and behaviors their forebears espoused and held dead as American values. Cultural and social regression is a survival mechanism. Animals are capable of erratic behaviors when stressed. Humans are a genetic extension of such adaptations. This is how our history repeats itself, in the face of what we learned yet had to modify in order to weather new circumstances and contingencies. ( the initial quote here was from a popular song called The Living Years.)
