I read a lot of British children's literature when I was a kid and I seem to recall those books as all using very florid tag lines. It was part of their tally-ho, pip-pip charm!

What a fantastic tutorial on writing dialogue, Barbara.

I was going to ask you how you are able to just immerse yourself in a book without analyzing it . . . but I know how, because I do the same thing in conversations with people who are not clients - and I do not analyze what they are saying for covert meanings etc.

I've always thought it must be wonderful to be a writer of fiction. That kind of life, thinking up plots, constructing the life of a character, etc. has always appealed to me. I know I have idealized what it must be like, and that in truth it is bloody hard work . . . but I enjoy my little fantasy. And then, you appear - someone who is living it! I am trying hard to not be too envious.

Debra, Lol Oh! I loved all things British when I was young. Esp. Hayley Mills, who I wanted to be. She was oh so British. Smashingly, scathingly brilliant! Cheerio!

Bonnie, Thanks, hon. Ah, yes, the glamorous life of a writer. :p) But seriously, my editor head and my creative head are not friends. They constantly bicker about who's right. So I try to keep them apart. And yes, bloody hard. But it does have it's good side.
Me: "What is that, again?"
Book: "She's such a kidder..."
:p)

I'm weird about my taglines. Where I want to use them is when the speaker is doing something where they couldn't be talking at the same time as the action, so I want a tagline. Like if the speaker is drinking something and then talks, it drive me crazy, like:

Kat drank her coffee. "This is good." well, I'm picturing Kat drinking her coffee and talking at the same time, so it drives me nuts. I know in reality it isn't simultaneous, but my brain needs the tag.

Kat drank her coffee, then said, "this is good"

Just as simple examples. :)

But, I never use anything other than said/asked.

Kathryn, I know what you mean. Sometimes the rhythm just feels wrong that way. Sometimes, I'm fine with it. I'll often just take that chance to add a bit of inner thought there, just to transition it if it feels wrong. But like I said, it's all so subjective.

I'm so glad you're feeling better!

This sounds like an excellent book and coming from you... one I would like to read. I am learning so much from reading your blog. totally things I was unaware while reading but am beginning to understand why I like certain dialogue compared to others. So glad I'm not 6 feet under and can still learn!

Oh! You made me smile because I've been hoping I'd feel better after this was all over - yup, mine has been brewing for a while and now that it's out, I wondered if I'd feel a difference once all the anesthetic and etc was out of my body *smiling!*
