Sensible ideas, all.

I'm toying with a fantasy setting where all the standard D&D monsters exist, but in almost all cases, there's only one of each type. And they're Giant.

like the chick whose whole body was full of tiny spiders who the driders use as a living trap and whose head explodes when you come near her, covering you in spiders.

"She turns around, and there's a spiderweb in her mouth" was your most perfect DM description -- I filled in all the details and emotions in a split second and creeped myself out.

I like your style! Technically, though, you could put a few of those "slots" in the rabbit-hole category. Ah! Wait a minute... maybe you like to run a rabbit-hole campaign! Tricky biz...

A minor quibble:
On a 1 or on a d?? do the Manticore(s) in question happen to be fans of iambic pentameter?

@Tom

I think there's a typo in your comment, but if I get you, you're asking what die to roll the 1 or 2 on.

Whatever die you want, if nonrhyming verse is common in your world, roll it on a d4, if uncommon, feel free to use a d100

Ah. Thank you Zak. That was indeed what I was asking.

Good tips - I try to think in the same terms when writing encounters, adding something new to the mix, something unexpected.

"In the Kingdom of Jam, all disputes between lords are settled with a rap battle. You may nominate a vassal of knightly rank as your second ; whoever drops the phattest rhymes shall control the Manticore, and he who does not control the Manticore shall be devoured."
