"Too often Jesus films have perpetuated anti-Semitism by portraying a weak Pilate being pushed into condemning Jesus by the Jewish people and/or their leaders."

The problem is that John's gospels uses "Ioudaioi" as shorthand for the Judean religious-political establishment and those loyal to it. We often hear references to "the Russians" or "the Americans" in the same way that John referred to "the Judeans." In reality, just as most Americans are not the MAGA faithful and ought not to be identified with Trump or his policies, plenty of Judeans did not identify with Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin or recognize their claim to authority. There's a reason why Biblical scholars and historians of first century Palestine increasingly prefer to speak of the "Judaisms" of the Second Temple period rather than of a monolithic "Judaism" led by the Temple establishment. We can't assume that most Second Temple sects saw the Sanhedrin as "their leaders." What Jesus films need to get across is that there were many sects during the Second Temple period, that Jesus led one such sect, and that the Sanhedrin were not the leaders of "the Jews" but only of those Judeans who recognized their claim to authority. What Jesus films shouldn't do is downplay the role of the Sanhedrin in the execution of Christ, or depict Caiaphas as the best of Judeans like "The Passion" miniseries did.

Hi, thanks for your comment.
I think I broadly agree with you actually. Certainly I've long argued for the "JudaismS" thing and the film does as well as any can recall at doing this. I'm less certain about the depiction of the Sanhedrin. The fact that Jesus was crucified implies, to me at least, that the Romans were in the driving seat, the Gospels' portrayal, with them being heavily involved, seems to relate to some element of truth, but I'm also uncomfortable with that assertion given how damaging that point has been.

For me a film would have to really build a strong depiction of neutral, un/disinterested, majority Jews that acted as a counterpoint to a more involved Sanhedrin, and even then, I'd be nervous.
