Hi Monica,
We live in such a hypergenderized (is that a word?) society that if you don't fit in a particular gender box your life can be hell. I think that things are changing a bit but we have a long way to go.
But I have a question, what if you totally reject gender? Or what if your vision of yourself is part masculine part feminine? Is there a community of people that you know of that have hybridized (once again, I'm not sure if thats a word) their gender?
I've had gender issues since I was four years old and am only now truly at a place where rather that fighting myself, I can explore me. So this post and your blog in general are a godsend!

As always, thanks!

Good explanation Monica. I have never had a problem understanding that this could happen. Actually with the millions of things happening as an embryo developes and as you explain, the shooting hormones, and this has exact timings that can be affected by so many variables including stress of the mother, I find it hard to believe it wouldn't happen.

It's good that young folks now have so much info and are forming gender-queer support groups and such for wherever you are on the gender binary scale. Yayy!

Actually, if a person does not actively, and aggressively pursue surgery, then they are not truly transsexual. Now, I personally do not understand people who feel a compulsion to call themselves transsexual when they are not, but it is a common phenomena.

And no, medical reasons for not having surgery are exceedingly rare (almost non-existent in this day and age, because the surgery is increasingly recognized as essential) and the financial excuse just doesn't fly at all. If you need the surgery, you will find a way, and if don't need the surgery, then you are not a transsexual.

Jennifer,
Itr was only several years ago that some surgeons began performing SRS for HIV-infected patients. I know of several people with medical conditions that will not allow them to to have the final surgery.

And your personal defintion of a transsexual based on surgery is a common one in segments of the white transgeder community.

So a transman ISN'T a transsexual because they forgo genital surgery? Don't think so.

Surgery is supposed to be the icing on the cake. Your journey as a transperson focuses on the mental and the spiritual aspects of your desired gender, not the plumbing.
