A wave of nightly arson attacks in immigrant neighborhoods across Denmark continued with about 20 small fires reported across the country, police said Wednesday. Youths have been torching cars, waste containers and schools in unrest that started on Feb. 10. However, police said the situation has calmed down since the weekend when hundreds of fires were set in Copenhagen and other Danish cities.
Some of the youths said the unrest started as a protest against police harassment. In an open letter published Tuesday in a Copenhagen newspaper they accused police of racist and brutal behavior.
Some observers say that the reprinting of a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad in Danish newspapers last week may have aggravated the situation.
