"the gate the French colonists built" ??? The famous gate was built 9 centhuries ago and restored hundred of times since.

Right Driss, I think the original gate was to the left as you face the Medina, it was replaced by the French.

I have to agree with Driss and David. The original gate was further north. This one was built by the French at the beginning of the 1900s, so it's about 100 years old. The French wanted a gate big enough to get troops through to quell any riots inside the medina!

It must be a case of festival fever - but someone came up with the idea of making the superb Bab Boujeloud VERY blue. The coloured lights are ... er... well... not quite as pretty as the gate the French colonists built, but then, hey, there's nothing like a bit of fun with a bunch of coloured lights.
And while we are handing out compliments - congratulations to the Fez Sacred Music Festival organisers for the consideration of placing large banners in public spaces so that everyone can see the festival programme in French and Arabic - well done!
