The general belief is that Hostel II failed because it became available online weeks before its theatrical debut. It's a shame because as you note this is a terrific film and a worthy sequel to the original. On a side note, this is one of the only times that I figured out how it was going to end early on - normally I'm awful at figuring these things out. I want to comment more but I must get ready for work! Excellent review.

Jordan - your links aren't working.

I loved this movie.. possibly even more than the first (though the ending isn't as satisfying) but don't think I'll ever be able to sit through it again. I like how you distinguished it from part one - "there are no more questions of just desserts".

Actually the only way I could have been fully satisfied with the ending of Part II is if a nuclear warhead was involved.

Somehow this one didn't creep me out the same way the first one did, which I have to say was a profound relief. It probably has more to do with my own mental state than anything intrinsic to the movie.

I didn't catch it in the theaters, but observed all of the images released with the worst feelings of dread. Especially this one. In the early parts of the movie (when everything is still okay), I think I was hyperventilating. Perhaps the terrible things that happened weren't quite as bad as what I was anticipating.

Or it may have been the glossier sets. Something about the blunt reality of the first Hostel really got to me.

Anyway, enough about me. You nailed the achievements of the flick in your review, Jordan. It's almost a how-to on sequel making; deliver the goods the first one had but also expand on your story so it makes sense for people to come back.

Yeah, it really is a "how to" on sequel making; that's a good way to put it. I tried to make clear (in my review) how fearlessly they stick to and augment their premise, rather than excusing it or apologizing for it.
