TV shows I've been checking out are The Incredible Hulk and 2nd season of The Walking Dead, both of which are not "new" but I seems to be on a 10-year time delay from the rest of humanity.
Over the summer I thumbed through some juvenile fiction books, Alienation and Invasion (2 parts of a trilogy; think MiB in high school) as well as some education theory Freedom CHallenge and Everywhere All the Time. I re-read We for a Dystopian/Utopian book club (sooooo Berkeley, I know) and now I'm re-reading World War Z before the movie comes out.
For the past 6 months or so I have been methodically going through every single episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I became so hooked that I also purchased approximately 10 different Alfred Hitchcock short story anthologies, which I read all summer long while sitting on my deck drinking Vodka. After I ran out of Hitchcock episodes I watched all of the “New Twilight Zone” episodes (the Twilight Zone was brought back in the 80s and in the early 2000s). They are hit or miss (mostly miss), but I hound a few really good episodes. I recently watched all the Mad Men episodes (except for the recent season, which I haven’t seen yet) and I re-watched Capricorn One over the weekend – fun, silly stuff.
We started watching the first season of "Downton Abbey" earlier in the summer - but then got sidetracked by stuff. I'd really like to get back to that. I did read all the Shades of Grey books earlier this year, for what that's worth! Since my commute is 45 minutes each way I've been listening to books on CD quite a bit. I prefer non-fiction for those and am currently listening to "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed. It's the story of her hike on the Pacific Crest Trail which she embarks on after her Mother dies. Pretty cool so far. The one fiction series I've enjoyed is the "Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency" which takes place in Botswana. Dig those a lot.
i finally caught the Mad Men train and have been greedily taking down a whole disc in a night as netflix sends them to me.
brilliant script and performances, exquisite cinematography. and the drum beat in the opening credits is frickin slammin.
i mention the script, and i want to point out that every few episodes, i hear a bit of dialogue so taut and meaningful, that i pause the ep and write down the exchange on my white-erase board. the most recent one, which is still there...

I'm addicted to podcasts and my new favorite is the Duncan Trussell Family Hour. You may remember him as the hilarious narrator in the Tesla drunken history video with Crispin Glover.
I really dug WWZ, CM. The dystopia/utopia book club is classic, too. A friend of mine used that as his "theme" for his section of Great Ideas last year. I'll have to ask for a copy of his syll.
I'm finally reading Catch-22. (Listening to it on my commute, actually).
Getting back into Y:The Last Man graphic novel series and finishing up Death Note and Planetary (other comics).
Watching way too much tv: Homeland, Mad Men, Veep, Hell on Wheels, Newsroom, and a bunch more. Veep is fucking fantastic.
Also shopping for a light to hang above my kickass pool table! Octo and DCD will appreciate...

Last year I started off these Countdown posts with an appeal for everyone to complete their uncompleted Horrorthon Best Ofs from the previous year. There's no need to do that this year, as everyone got all responsible and stuff. Sooo...
Think of a new show, or movie, or book, or any other relevant media experience that really left an impression on you in the last eleven months.
My entry is the indomitable Adventure Time with Finn and Jake. I'd been aware of this for a while but since Zack isn't quite ready for it I wasn't checking it out. Then I got to do some work on it (which still hasn't aired so I can't go into details), and after screening just a few eps for "research" I was totally hooked. The characters are endearing, the stories are dynamic, and best of all you never can predict every little bit of it. It is staggeringly original, and it will surprise you.
So, what do you got, 'thonners? What's been blowing your brain out of its boat this year?

new-movie-wise probably avengers was my fave, mr. ac loved cabin in the woods.
new-book-wise i got nothing. the best books i read this year were slaughterhouse-five and a midsummer night's dream.
