Oh that poor woman. I wonder why she's posing with the creepy dude from The Hills Have Eyes.

This whole Wonder Woman debacle is interesting in that it highlights just how many visual conceits are built into the comic book framework.

It doesn't matter who's drawing the comic book: with very few exceptions, if we're talking about a superhero comic then we're looking at drawings by somebody who's very, very good at taking a complete fantasy (people who can dress up in costumes and look like those pictures) and make it look plausible and real.

I mean, technically NONE of the superheroes or tomb-raiding adventurers or intrepid archaeologists and space travelers are chosen for their looks, right? But in the comics, ALL of them look like extremely carefully photographed supermodels, dressed in skin-tight fabric than never wrinkles or bunches, with hair and capes and cloaks that blow around photogenically. And the sad truth is that it takes a Scarlett Johannsen or a Christian Bale or an Angelina Jolie (in other words, a profoundly charismatic person) to actually look like that.

So, Adrienne whatever-your-name-is, don't take it personally. In the comics, it's easy...but in real life, it's nearly impossible to carry off the "superhero" thing.
