i give the trailer a solid 4 stars, and it reminded me of another horror movie cliche: using a flare gun as a weapon.

great review of a mediocre yet entertaining movie!

Yeah, dude, your review actually makes me want to see it, damn it! It's too bad that your summary of the film ends up being better than the actual product. This film falls within that Hammer time-period of movies I just don't like. I stated it in another post but those films just have a look and feel that I can't get into. They tend to be overlong and boring. Your review suggests the same thing. Welcome to this year's Horrorthon!

Your review is great. If I were to review the film by the review, then you'd get 4 stars from me.

Outstanding review! Sounds like this movie would be perfect for MST3K.

"..intriguing setup with starchy but well-delivered dialogue, followed inexplicably by more of the same until they're still setting up three quarters of the way into the movie, and then a hastily slapped-together conclusion."

Very well put! Lord knows I've seen my share of Hammer films. I enjoy them much more than my brother does but Octo, you nailed it. I picked up an 8 movie Hammer box set and every single movie falls right into that formula.

This movie sounds great! I'm surprised I had never heard of it before.

That trailer is a riot! And the book it's based on is available at Amazon, so you could follow up watching mediocrity by reading mediocrity!

the Hammer formula bit is spot on. even the good ones start out seeming like they're going to deliver and then just don't go anywhere. this is why the vampire pictures work better -- smaller scale, easier to execute.

i was going to make a joke about the bit in the trailer about having to see this on a big screen to capture all the bigness of the movie, but judging by the last few shots of the boat getting detonated, it actually looks to be pretty well budgeted.

makes me wonder whether during production meetings someone ever said, "sirs, i just realized a fatal flaw in our plan for this movie: we live in the 60's and our effects suck."

Ever notice how many of Octo's reviews contain somewhere the line: "I saw this once as a kid..."

As a kid, Octo was basically Catfreek--he saw fucking everything.
