Anne Hathaway, meet Dirty Harry.
Clint Eastwood's drama Gran Torino coasted to the top spot at the box office, topping Hathaway's Bride Wars, according to studio estimates from box office trackers Nielsen EDI.
Torino, which many expect to nab Eastwood a best-actor Oscar nomination, raked in $29 million, more than $10 million what analysts had projected. The film, which had been playing in limited release for the past month, has done $40.1 million.
Hathaway's comedy Bride Wars, with Kate Hudson, was a distant second with $21.5 million, though it exceeded most expectations.
The horror film The Unborn also enjoyed a strong weekend, opening to $21.1 million, about $5 million more than expected.
The canine comedy Marley & Me fell from its top perch after two weeks at No. 1, taking fourth place with $11.4 million. The picture has done $123.7 million in three weeks.
Brad Pitt's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button rounded out the top 5 with $9.5 million, bringing its total to $94.3 million.
The only other major newcomer, the faith-based drama Not Easily Broken, did $5.6 million, slightly better than expected.
Ticket sales were even with last weekend and 24% ahead of the same weekend last year.

Well, that's a satisfying feeling. I don't automatically dislike chick flicks, but I do when they scream CHICK FLICK at the volume Bride Wahs does.

Agreed. Gran Torino is actually a pretty decent flick and I'm glad it beat this stupid-looking comedy.
