I did catch a couple of other flicks this summer.

Bridesmaids cracked me the hell up.

Harry Potter was great although the 3D really bugged me that time (lots of double images in the margins).

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was really great, although James Franco can act way better than that. I didn't think the apes looked real, but that didn't stop them from being engaging characters.

It's true, we spend endless time talking about upcoming films here on the blog but people rarely mention that they have actually watched any them. What about the rest of you guys, what did you watch this summer?

I love your superhero summary, and I completely agree with all of your ratings. I tried (unsuccessfully) to get JSP to watch Thor, I thought it was terrific fun along the lines of Flash Gordon. I think X-Men First Class is bar none the best of all the X-Men films. Green Lantern was a huge "meh" for me. I was never thrilled, not for one second. I loved Captain America with my only gripe being the montage footage, which was featured heavily in the ads but amounted to very litte in the final film.

I didn't like Bridesmaids mostly because I thought the bride treated her best friend terribly the entire time. What a disloyal friend. Aside from the poop scene I never cracked a smile.

Loved Apes!

Hated Zookeeper (if you make animals or babies talk you lose me immeidately). I only watched it because I was desperate one night and I found a bootleg online. Terrible.

I enjoyed Super 8 but thought it was a bit over-hyped. Still, that was one awesome train crash!

Super 8 is my biggest I Wish I'd Caught It flick this summer.

That Bridesmaids point is pretty accurate as the tension you talk about is the backbone of the comedy. And you were someone for whom the tension went to far and broke. That happens to me a lot, but not with this.

I also watched The Losers, The Expendables and Machete this summer, as part of a "last summer action movie catch up" film festival.

I can't recommend The Losers. If it's on cable and you're looking to watch something, it's okay. But it's "action movie with quirky personality" thing just isn't as cute as it thinks.

The Expendables held up to my expectations, despite the fact that Stallone's head looks like a wax sculpture of Stallone's head that was left in the sun for a few hours and then had a goatee drawn on it.

I was disappointed in Machete. I rewatched the trailer beforehand and the movie just wasn't nearly as much fun. Some great moments, but also a ton of moments in which Jessica Alba was talking.

I liked X-Men and it may very well be the best prequel out there but I was still annoyed that it was a prequel and I don't think I'll watch it repeatedly like I did the others. (I'm of the opinion that X-Men 3 is underrated by the way.)

Super 8 was enjoyable but didn't blow me away. I pretty much loved Planet of the Apes. I yelled *mild spoiler* "Go under the bridge!" during the climax and the apes actually listened to me! However, I'm still bothered by the inclusion of the virus.

LOL Octo about Jessica Alba in Machete. I just watched Hobo With A Shotgun and I daresay it's my favorite in the Grindhouse series. The way that worked in hilariously bad dialog completely captured the essence of the 70's films they're paying homage to.

I'm planning on watching Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern back to back in November.

trig on licit toom, listed shit blecker.

if there were a like button under octo's comment about jessica alba, i'd have clicked it.

i agree with just about everything said here, although i still haven't caught First Class.

captain america chose to make itself more about the story and the characterizations, which was a good move because the action is just okay, and the actors are good and all know what they're supposed to be doing there.

I really enjoyed this review of the big four superhero films. I enjoyed them for the same reasons that you did. The film makers learned lessons from past superhero movies and you can see the results right up on the screen. I am excited about sequels to all of these but Green Lantern. One trip with Ryan Reynolds was enough.

That's cool of you to comment, Cal! My fellow Horrorthonner Jordan tuned me into your blog earlier this year, and I'm a fan. Thanks!
