Sorry but I don't trust a damn thing Lucas says. Everything in Star Wars was inspired by the Bay Area. City in the clouds? "Green" planet of Endor? Why even the Creature Cantina is a total ripoff of the Walnut Creek Farmer's Market. D-uh.

And I KNOW I saw Lucas himself in an interview say exactly the opposite. It was one of the bonus features that accompanied the 27th or so VHS repackaging of the trilogy, but it was an interview where he stated for a fact he drove by those things every day, and that those structures looked like they should be moving. They even, during the interview, intercut footage of the cranes that they shot from a moving car. So you could pretend to be Lucas.

And Mos Eisley? A wretched hive of scum and villiany?

Oakland, right JSP?

Even the bounty hunter Dengar was modeled after a disgruntled war veteran who mutters obscenities on Market St.
