Very nice summary/analysis. I watched this outside of Horrorthon a few years ago and really enjoyed it. The town is almost as idyllic as the town of Willoughby in that old Twilight Zone episode. I completely agree with your observation, "It’s a great character study and totally worth seeing, but I’m not sure there’s any images or moments that will stick in my mind’s eye the way that often happens with Hitch’s best works." Until I got halfway through your review I had forgotten I had seen this before.

Excellent review, way to get those Hitchcock's out there! I have this film in my collection but have yet to watch it. I will definitely put it on my things to watch list though. Sounds wonderful.

I loved, "He’s wealthy, smart, charming…and a fucking nutjob with serious anger issues..."

Sounds great. Very interesting that Thornton Wilder wrote the screenplay. I definitely have to see it for that reason alone.

Excellent review!

Does the villain pop a kid's balloon with his cigarette in this? I saw that excerpt once accompanied by a voiceover explaining Hitchcock's philosphy on villains.
