"I don't want to ruin it for people, you know?" Groening says. "Whenever people say it's Springfield, Ohio, or Springfield, Massachusetts, or Springfield, wherever, I always go, 'Yup, that's right.'"

You just did ruin it for the people Matt Groening. You just did.

I don't like this news story one iota. I don't understand why he would ruin a good thing by revealing the location. It comes across as a desperate attempt to get The Simpsons in the news.

He's not even "revealing" anything.

This is exactly like Ridley Scott's "Deckard is a replicant" bullshit. It's obvious that the fake Oregon town is just the source of the name and that the "real" Simpsons Springfield is something else existing somewhere else. Didn't they reveal the impossible collection of neighboring states at one time? Springfield is no more a real place than is Metropolis or Gotham City (even though they're both "actually" New York).

And, for Christ's sake, "Capitol City" should give it all away even more! There's no such place, damn it.

Jordan - couldn't agree more. Nothing's been "ruined" - if anything, it was the stupid latter-day "Behind The Music" episode (where the voice-over stated that the town was in West Virginia) that ruined anything, as far as canon was concerned.

The list of why it's not any specific Springfield is too long to enumerate; but that reference to WV really pissed me off at the time. Another example of post-season-8 writer flailing.

This interview - not such a big deal. As Jordan pointed out, he only used the name and broad strokes (street names - I love that "Lovejoy" is a sweet there) to create the town - he's not officially stamping it. And the whole family is based on his family, by crikey. Also, the interview had some illuminating things to say about Portland, and I now want to visit.

Springfield (and Jub Jub) -Still Anywhere You Want It To Be.
