Actually, the pairings were a little sloppy. They paired the top vote-earner vs. the bottom one (32nd), the 2nd with the 31st, etc. That's what you're seeing on the whole left side of the bracket picture. The brackets on the right have far fewer predictable standoffs, because they're all from the middle of the group.
The worst case scenario would be that every battle on the left side would be a slaughter, and then you have all the favorite ships going against each other in the second round, which would knock half of them out of the fight kind of early.
I don't know what they'll replace it with, but it'll probably be more interesting.

They should have just paired them randomly. Otherwise they weight the competition if any opinion goes into the pairings, right?
