Summerisle said "Thoughts: 1) The term "Sea goblin" sounds does sound somewhat goofy but I would chalk that up to poor translation or maybe literal but not cool sounding? 2) Your analysis in paragraph 4 is dead on. I think that's the exact reason the 3 of us, as horror obsessives, are so captivated with the film. 3) I need to start reading Lovecraft pronto. 4) Scariest American movie ever made? Bold statement. Trying desperately to refute but I got nothing at the moment. Let me think about this one..."

1.Considering the Japanese relationship with mysticism, it is totally possible that the sea goblin thing is actually kind of cool, if we could get it the way they do. We know that Anna Morgan did something unnatural to bear a child (I'm just disregarding Sissy Spacek and Ring Two completely, cuz I wanna), and some horrible supernatural force involving the sea makes a lot of sense, given Samara's water motif. It's even potentially scary. But even taking that into account, I'd say Ringu still shows too much: take the press conference Sadako attends with her mom where several people die of brain hemorrhages, or the little boy's dad having acknowledged pyschic powers when he gives people a Vulcan death grip. I'm actually planning to do a Ringu/Ring comparison this year, to get a better grip on this.

2. Thanks

3. I have a couple good anthologies of H.P. that you can borrow, new neighbor. Cinemawise, I want to do a bit of a Lovecraft roundup this year, but there's a weird variety of stuff to choose from. A lot of straight to video items, "loosely based ons," etc.

4. I'll stick by that bold statement for now, but I'll admit it's a pretty grey area.
