Oh man, I really have to get cable. And a TV. Isn't The Horror Channel trying to do this, too? Isn't that why they're called "The Horror Channel?"

More to the point, why is the fan base getting so big? Is it that people are catching on, or that the world is more horrible and we need this escape?

Remember that statistic about the Amish. A higher percentage of them are choosing to remain in the church than at any point in their history.

Yeah, I remember that they were promoting the hell out of the Horror Channel about a year ago, then I heard nothing. They have a pretty good site on the net, but alas I still don't see anything about the channel. However, I remember how excited I was when I heard that the Sci-Fi Channel was coming into existence - and we all now what a crap-fest that channel turned out to be. The two worst words, "original programming". I thought sci-fi was going to be crammed full of old sci-fi flicks; instead I find nothing of interest on that channel.

At least "original programming" isn't the complete suck fest it used to be. HBO wasted years of everyone's time until they got the Sopranos. And even Sci-Fi's efforts aren't universally bad, there's the very good Battlestar Galactica series. It's all by itself, of course, but it's there.

That said, I'm with you. The Sci-Fi channel should be old SF movies and TV shows; then I'd be all over it.
