Oh man am I psyched for this movie. I've been watching more Godzilla flicks lately, and I have to say: you really mess with a people when you drop A-bombs on them. They just can't get enough of giant monsters trashing their cities.
I love the line about giant robots showing up in Japanese soap operas now, it echoes a rant I've been spouting for a couple of years.
Rant goes like this:
Popular anime "Big O" is an investigation into the nature of memory, perception, identity and choice vs. fate. The narrative mechanism? Giant robots fighting.
Popular anime "FLCL" (pronounced "Fooly Cooly") is a coming-of-age story about early adolescence, honesty, responsibility and girls. The narrative mechanism? Giant robots fighting.

[Image] From Iwatchstuff, "If you haven't seen the English trailer for Negadon: The Monster From Mars, you just haven't lived. In the film, some kind of alien pod lands on Earth, releasing Negadon, who may or may not be from Mars. He starts destroying Japan, so the Japanese fight back the only way they know how: with a giant robot. I think even Japanese soap operas now involve giant fighting robots, but this film is fresh in that it doesn't also involve tentacle sex (in the trailer, at least). If this is what a culture based on video games and sexual repression creates, maybe they've got something right after all."
