I had no idea this was so huge. The 1971 act stops the horses from being sold for slaughter, right?

Now I love animals just as much as the next guy but maybe it's time to revamp that legislation. I have a hard time thinking about so many tax dollars going to support horses.

Aren't there a whole range of other more important things - like health care, etc?

I'm sure many animal lovers will blast me for saying that. But there has to be a responsible way to manage this situation.

Here in Indiana we have a problem with too many deer in the state parks. Like the horses, they have no natural predators and will destroy the habitat. However, we do not round them up and adopt them out. We invite hunters kill them. But deer are not seen as pets.

This was an exceptionally well-written and well-illustrated post.

As an Equine Science Major I would suggest that you thoroughly research your facts about the evolution of the Equess as well as the process of the roundups before you publish an article. Equines are actually native to the North Americas, they crosses the Bering straight and then came back with Columbus. Accurate research is always appreciated by the public.

Ive got my heart set on a mustang colt to raise up as a stallion. Probably not this year but one year. Not to breed, but to ride. It's still a dream so I'll still hear arguments about keeping the intact male if there is any opposition. We recently moved to south Utah and I see wild horses every time we drive East. The stallions look like the healthiest most versatile-ly beautiful animals I have ever seen. This month I checked the BLM auction upcoming and they only have fillies on offer!!! I wonder if they don't adopt out the colts??? Very curious. If I have to I'll go to one of the holding facilities and beg for a colt to slip through for me. :) We just moved to south Utah and it truly is magically unspoiled.
