Introduction To me, a friend is a friend, whether furred, feathered, or only with skin. Someone who is always interested in what you are doing, whether it involves cookies or not. Just because a cat takes time to get to know and often is too busy to see we need attention, doesn't at all mean there's nothing much to know about a cat. And every single one is so different and charming. (Okay, so the girl is with a dog; so are my cats.)
Interests First, above and beyond anything: eating first-class potato chips while looking at poincinana trees. Then: Jillelamudi Amma and Mata Amritananda Mayi, dark chocolate, husband, cats, dogs, birds in general, hummingbirds and tailor birds, all trees (especially coconuts), flowers, weeds, water, the ocean and rivers, gardens, all Mexican veggie food, avocados and guacamole, fabrics, textiles, hummus, babaganoush and other Mideastern veggie food, all animals, Indian and funky clothes, temples, watching people dance, Creation, looking out windows, children under 8, clouds, green and purple coastal waters, geography, the American West, Indian veggie food, geology, history, spontaneous bliss states, impressionistic art, elephants and camels and dolphins, manatees and whales, writing humor, early morning birds, roosters, sunlight in the very late afternoon, books, books, books, writing, moving to new places, visting new and old places, "rounding, " riding around the countryside, the sound of water birds, bird calls, native Americans and their history and culture, keeping scrapbooks, Taj Malabar Hotel lounge, sunlight through coconut palms, Scorpio SUV, designing book covers, light massage, cold coffee, cold coffee with ice cream, chocolate mint chip ice cream, one scoop chocolate mint chip ice cream with a scoop of coffee ice cream, my mother's warm chocolate chip cookies and/or the batter, vanilla ice cream on warm pecan pie (yikes!), bamboo, mosque calls to prayer, "Ave Maria, " finely detailed jewelry, compassion, happiness over nothing, not letting things get me down, Indian street celebrations, researching on the Net, my trusty digital camera, the wind, my cook and caring animal caretaker Kuttiamma (Kalevani).
Favorite Movies The Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters.
Favorite Music Brazilian, Cuban, African, Indian, U.S. retro, Birdland, shakuhachi and American Indian flute, and many other ethnic sounds, including, yes, "Hotel California."
Favorite Books Much too many, including Van Loon's Lives, Hudson's The Secret Garden, Dr. Doolittle books when I was young, Alexander McCall Smith's Botswana tales, certain Tahitian novels, Bhisham Sahni's and most of R. K. Narayanan's stories, regional Indian novels about villagers (check out the publishing company called Indian Writings in Chennai), Lang's fairy tales, Sylvia Ashton Warner's fiction and nonfiction, all books by and about Advaitan masters, foremost among these Jillellamudi Amma (Mata Sri Anasuya Devi), etc., and ANYTHING published by Stone Hill Foundation Publishing Company in Cochin.
