| Introduction | My husband and I have two beautiful daughters, ages 6 and 8. This is just a part of our story about how our oldest child got sick and nobody knew it. A hidden illness that presents, at least for us, as behavioral symptoms, called PANDAS/PANS. An illness easily mistaken as poor behavior, bad manners, and the result of lax parenting. We knew better. Our daughter, although more sensitive than most, hit every developmental milestone on time or early and was a happy, inquisitive, affectionate person. That all changed, somewhat gradually at first and then very suddenly. It took my husband and I little bit of time to catch up and figure out what was happening but even in the darkest moments I knew in my core that it was something that could be fixed. I write to raise awareness for the thousands of children who are suffering right this very moment because parents, pediatricians, and therapists don't know or don't understand enough about this illness. If not for the advice of a mother on a sensory processing board I might not have come upon a path to recovery for our daughter. This is our story. |
