| Introduction | Time traveler? We're all traveling through time -- but I admit I stole the notion from xkcd.com/630/. Love this clever, clever cartoon! Papua New Guinea had a great part in shaping me after I came here in 1963 at the age of 21. I worked in the media here until I left to go full time to university in Australia in 1977, but yearned to return. Things like marriage, family, aging parents and Timor-Leste's emergence from oppression intervened. Now, at last, I have made it back here. Proudest moments: PNG's Independence in 1975, the establishment of the NBC, and initiating and driving the Diploma of Journalism at UPNG (way ahead of Australia). |

| Favorite Music | George Telek, Patty Potts Doi, Vunakabi Devil Boys, and Blasius ToUna from PNG; Mozart, Beethovan, Bach, and Rachmaninoff; Louis Armstrong and lots of jazz; and most of all the sound of my daughter, Jessica, singing -- the most beautiful voice in the world. |
| Favorite Books | Too many to list, really. "A Short History of Progress" by Ronald Wright tops a long list of reading on the environment and human condition that started with Rachel Carson's "The Silent Spring" and Charles Reich's "The Greening of America". Never forget "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert Pirsig and, of course, the radio version of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by the late Douglas Adams. In thrillers, anything by Martin Cruz Smith. I've just been reading (late 2011) Jonathan Neale's "A People's History of the Vietnam War", and Andrew Fowlers' "The Most Dangerous Man in the World" (about Wikileaks and Assange). Both fascinating and very thought provoking. |
