In the United States, the definition of "gothamite" is a native or inhabitant of New York City. In the United Kingdom, a gothamite was a resident of Gotham, a village just outside Nottingham, whose residents ("the wise men of gotham") were, according to legend, very foolish. As for the literary gothamite being a bookish New Yorker or a bookish fool, maybe there's a little bit of both at work. |
