Introduction | As a founder of SMS Ltd, COSMIC, & the UK Rightshifting Network, with +35 years experience in softsystems, I am committed to leading firms in learning to be more effective at creating value and achieving desired outcomes for all stakeholders. I fell into computing in 1972. I discovered Jackson Structured Programming in 76, and Harlan Mill’s Chief Programmer Teams in 77; more recently I’ve been using Scrum & Kanban. Gerry Weinberg taught me to explore requirements. I learnt data modelling from Edgar Codd & Chris Date. In the 70s I was exposed to Simpact’s PROMPT. In the 80s I helped write PRINCE. I did CMM Assessments in ‘88, introduced the founders of the European SEPG to the SEI in the 90s. I threw people at late projects despite Fred Brooks (and succeeded under special conditions). I’ve moved from batch, to character-mode VDUs, to page-mode OLTP, distributed PC networks, WiFi & web2 apps. My career’s evolved from ops, to programmer, Chief Programmer, Analyst, DPM, consultant with NCR, methodologist with Michael Jackson Systems Ltd & LBMS. I founded The Guild of Independent Function Point Analysts & my company, SMS in 1994. We’ve learned a lot… |
