Introduction Jim Chevallier is a food historian with a checkered past and eclectic interests. His most recent book is "Feasting with the Franks; the First French Medieval Food'; this follows a history of French bread - "Before the Baguette: The History of French Bread" - and a small work on the women who delivered bread in Paris and other cities for over a century: "They Came Bearing Bread; the Hard Lives of the Porteuses de Pain'.
