| Favorite Movies | Last year - or was it the year before? Damn - it was 'Being John Malkovich'. 'Total Recall' was a Friday night staple for ages: I love dual narratives and the clues in this are so subtle (if like me you're slow on the uptake...). 'Angel Heart' for the same reason; but they blow it in the final reel. 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers' is fabulous. |
| Favorite Music | Joni Mitchell. I think my favourite album is 'Court and Spark' but last year 'Hejira' got played a lot. Elvis Costello: 'The Juliet Letters'. I want to sing it: the range is a bugger. Renaissance polyphony. Oh dear. There's no way that can't sound poncey as hell. I sing a lot of it, but don't listen to it that often. Tori Amos: 'Boys for Pele' - I haven't listened to more recent stuff yet. The Beatles; Madness; the Proclaimers. Queen - Freddie Mercury is a great singer. Steeleye Span just for Maddy Prior: ditto. And I still love Emma Kirkby. Live, I try to get to as many gigs by I Fagiolini as possible, and I particularly like their wonderful mezzo, Clare Wilkinson. |

Diana Wynne Jones: 'Fire and Hemlock'. Evelyn Waugh: 'Scoop' and 'A Handful of Dust' - respectively the funniest and the saddest books in this list. George Orwell: '1984'. Malcolm Bradbury: 'The History Man'. Iris Murdoch: 'Under the Net'. Jane Austen: 'Emma'. Rudyard Kipling: 'Just So Stories'. Dodie Smith: 'I Capture the Castle'. Elaine Dundy: 'The Dud Avocado'.
