Occupation | Builder of fine critter homes, land lover, writer, sitter, walker, gardener, dog-, cat- and duck-care specialist |
---|---|
Location | Nova Scotia, Canada |
Introduction | Burned out after more than 20 years as a Chicago journalist, in 1993 I moved to Seattle and began designing wildlife-friendly gardens and natural landscapes. Now I live on my own 250 acres of land in the Acadian Forest region of the Northeast; I am making a home both here and, increasingly, on the Internet. Having had a well-misspent life, I now have the time to indulge my interests: food, plants, critters, ecology, technology, philosophy. |
Interests | philosophy, ecology, systems theory, gardening, cooking, food, mind, nature, myth, ritual, wildlife, wildlife habitat, ecological restoration, technology, homesteading and hobby farming, bees, butterflies, pollinators, hummingbirds, songbirds, amphibians, frogs, salamanders, ducks, snakes, trees, shrubs, wildflowers, water, air, soil, sun, night skies |
Favorite Movies | looking out the window, taking a walk, the phases of the moon, Peter Weir's "Fearless, " Ridley Scott's director's cut of "Bladerunner", "Greenfingers" |
Favorite Music | silence, crickets, coyotes, water, frogs, wind, birds, Leonard Cohen |
Favorite Books | footprints, snow, clouds, stars, broken branches, ripples, eddies, earth, "The Lawn: A History of an American Obsession" by Virginia Scott Jenkins, "Wild Neighbors: The Humane Approach to Living with Wildlife" by the Humane Society of the U.S., "Heart and Blood: Living with Deer in America" by Richard Nelson, "Humblebee Bumblebee" by Brian L. Griffin, "Bumblebee Economics" by Berndt Heinrich, "Pollinator Conservation Handbook" by the Xerces Society |
The squish of mud between your toes; how would you live your life as a frog?
