Favorite Books The Harry Potter series. Edith Wharton. And Jane Austen. And George Eliot (how awesome is Middlemarch?). And Thomas Hardy (Jude the Obscure isn't cheerful- really at all- but it is beautiful). And the Brontes. How escapist moody period novel loving are all of those writers? Lots of corsets and brooding and walks on wind-swept downs. And hot guys who behave terribly. Trashy murder mystery/thrillers (Deborah Crombie, John Dunning, Laurie King). Cookbooks. Travel books. And, I have to confess: Vogue. I am a real sucker for the "fix up a house somewhere pretty" book (Year in Provence, Under the Tuscan Sun, etc). I like Kipling and Melville but I read them very slowly. I get a kick out of the Patrick O'Brian books. The Flashman books rock.
