| Introduction | In 2003 our family moved to the mountains of Vermont. We had long lived in the city and had gotten a crush on the idea of country living from many long weekends up here leaf peeping and being tourists. Turns out we knew nothing about living in the country, or what it was like to live in the mountains where the winters are long and the rules were all different. For a long time it felt like we had moved to a foreign country. These essays are about our experiences,(alowing for some changed names, and a little poetic license here and there) including a sweet hen named Gertrude who turned into an evil rooster, the perils of buying the quaint country store, the way English speaking people can make you feel like you do not know their language, restoring an old farmhouse and using the windows as doors for no reason you can adequately explain, yuppie homeschooling, and a minister who kicked your dog just about summing up the whole thing. I will also finally tell all of my old indie movie going, art gallery opening, wine bar friends what there is to do up here..... |
