| Introduction | By day, I write legal documents for the Arizona state government. By night, I am a science-fiction writer. In time, I hope to make my night job into my permanent profession. It is said that the job or profession that's right for you is the one you would do even if you weren't getting paid. While a person who is not getting paid would starve to death, making this exercise implausible, I think it's just as effective if you replace "not getting paid" with "being paid a subsistence wage" -- that is, the point of the exercise is to take wealth out of the equation and find what stimulates your mind and drives your passion. For me, there is no question, none whatsoever, that I would continue to be a writer. I am a musician on the side, but I could put my instruments aside and still live a happy life. I could not do the same for writing. Like James Oliver Rigney, I intend to write until they nail my coffin shut. (Or, as is my preference, until my ashes are scattered upon the Arizona sands.) |
