Introduction Bill Donovan is a painter and draftsman who lives in New York. He is one of the founding members of Paintallica. In 2004-05 Bill spent a year in Afghanistan with the National Guard as a machine gunner in the turrets of HMMWV vehicles, and was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Bill’s drawings cover a wide range of subject matter, from meticulously drawn portraits to eerily developed cartoon characters to life drawings, and often include text and stories. Bill blogs for Beautiful/Decay.
Interests Paintallica is a collaborative group of artists who make work that is intentionally confrontational and impulsive. Working through the mail, the Internet and at small gatherings throughout the US the work is equal parts drawing, painting, sculpture and performance. Paintallica’s ideal platform is installation, where all aspects are incorporated into one space. An on-going creative dialogue between members informs the direction of each show. The raw and uncensored nature of Paintallica is integral to the mission of addressing sensitive, immediate and often taboo issues.
