Introduction I'm a long-distance hiker and backpacker. I've completed the John Muir Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail (2,660 miles). I've walked about 2,000 miles of Camino paths in Spain, France, and Portugal. I climbed Mt. Whitney (14,496') when I was 48 and Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340') in January 2007 when I was 65. My books, Patagonia Chronicle: On Foot in Torres del Paine; We're in the Mountains Not over the Hill: Tales and Tips from Seasoned Women Backpackers; and Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago came out of my hiking/backpacking experiences. At any one time I have several article or book ideas floating around in my head, but writing and publishing a book is a long-term commitment and so I consider carefully my topics before deciding to start a new project. It's all totally wild — and nothing that I would have dreamed possible 20 years ago! I guess it's just that I've taken to heart that old saying, "A thousand mile journey begins with one step." (Chinese Philosopher Lao Tse). I'm very excited about starting this new blog. I think I'll get to learn about, and share, many new topics and thoughts. Join in!

You have to dig a hole to China. Where do you start?

Duh! in any neighboring country right over the border. However, I seem to remember that when I was a kid, I thought that I could dig a hole through the earth from my own backyard.
