Introduction A bunch of years ago, Matt and I decided we wanted to live the good life- the country life- right in the city. We wanted to have an urban homestead, which would afford us all of the conveniences of city life (walkability, accessibility, sociability) while providing us with enough space to grow vegetables for market, raise animals, split and stack firewood, sit by the fire, bake bread, keep bees, preserve fruits and whatever else we might decide belongs in that pretty country living picture. Somehow, with the help of a serendipitous friendship, a willful suspension of reason and caution, and a lot of nerve, it is happening. It's been five and a half years since we bought our half acre lot in Germantown. We found lifelong friends and partners in our housemates and neighbors, got some chickens and some bees, dug four dozen vegetable beds, planted seventy fruiting trees and bushes, and somehow convinced our neighbor to sell us his beautiful house right next door. I started a blog in honor of all of this. I have made many resolutions to become a more disciplined writer. We shall see.
