Favorite Movies Classics: Casablanca, To Have and Have Not at The Brattle; King of Hearts on a snowy late night at the Orson Welles (you had to be there); early/mid Woody Allen (Annie Hall, Hannah's Sisters, Sleepers, C&M, Zelig), Sturges, Truffaut, Bergman, Ophuls, Kieslowski, Almodovar. Of course, Welles and Hitchcock. Babette's Feast. Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring. Selected "recent" favorites:The Killing Fields, The Crying Game, The English Patient, Being John Malkovich (& other Charlie Kaufman scripts), Crash.
Favorite Music Conventional tastes of my '60s generation here: Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Crosby Stills Nash (with and without Young), Janis & Big Brother, Paul Simon (with and without Garfunkel), Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro. Newer finds: Kirsty MacColl, Cassandra Wilson. Klezmer (start with Itzhak Perlman's In the Fiddler's House). Jewish Chants by Shlomo Carlebach, David Zeller and Shefa Gold. Classical preferences start with Bach and Mozart.
Favorite Books The Book of Genesis, The Book of Job (read ironically), Huck Finn, Roth's Counterlife, Heller's Catch-22, Milton Steinberg's As A Driven Leaf, Andre Schwarz-Bart's Last of the Just, Ari Elon's From Jerusalem to the Edge of Heaven, Rodger Kamenetz' The Jew in the Lotus, Jay Katz's Silent World of Doctor and Patient, Martha Lear's Heartsounds, Albert Hirschman's Exit Voice and Loyalty, multiple works by Clifford Geertz and by Michael Walzer (especially Spheres of Justice, Interpretation and Social Criticism, Exodus and Revolution, The Jewish Political Tradition).
