| Introduction | I love exploring Skagit Valley and the North Cascades. Along the way I began meeting Skagit farmers and learned they're everyday people who worry about expensive healthcare, keeping the house clean, having a happy family, and paying bills just like I do. Farmers are exceptionally hard workers, they're intuitive and in touch with nature, they're smart, they have mad fix-it skills, they're frugal and make do, they're honest and generous. Small family farms used to be the foundation of America, almost everyone farmed. Today, fewer than 1.5% of Americans are farmers. My respect for all independent farmers runneth over, organic and conventional. I want to give Skagit farmers a microphone so that people can hear their personal stories and feel more connected to them. If this blog encourages someone to meet a farmer and get closer to their food source, eat healthier, and/or grow something somewhere I will probably cry. |
