Introduction Joseph M. Getter is an ethnomusicologist, educator, and multi-instrumental performer of many styles of music: he has performed on vocals, computers, electronics, woodwinds, guitars, keyboards and percussion for Javanese gamelan, South Indian Carnatic, jazz, rock, Klezmer, Chinese silk and bamboo, Bollywood, devotional, experimental and orchestral musics.

Joseph composes and performs music for modern dance and theater productions, as music director for the Art Farm theater company, Oddfellows Playhouse, and the DancEnlight modern dance company. He teaches children at the Independent Day School Summer Camp, the Green Street Arts Center, and is Director of the Youth Gamelan at Wesleyan.

A graduate of Oberlin College, Joseph is a doctoral candidate in music at Wesleyan University. He has presented and published his scholarship on the music and culture of India; his main research interests are in media, film, transnational flows of culture, and issues pertaining to identity, tradition and moderity. Joseph teaches ethnomusicology, woodwinds, world music, and Western music at Southern Connecticut State University and the University of New Haven.
