Introduction “I find that it is only through fiction that I am able to reach the truth and tell my story.” Elka Amorim was born in Brasilia; the capital of Brazil. Upon graduating UFMG, one of the top art programs in Brazil, Amorim received the prestigious Apartes Scholarship from the Brazilian government, which she used to pursue an MFA at Hunter College in New York. During her graduate study and during her later study of Art Pedagogy at Pratt Institute, Amorim exhibited globally and received various awards and residencies, including those from the Bronx Museum of Art, the Henry Street Settlement Artist-In-Residence Program, and the Brooklyn Community Access Television Artist Residency. Elka Amorim lives in New York City where she teaches and produces new works. She is represented by two New York galleries: Galeria Galou and Pierogi.
