Introduction | One day in high school, there was talk of going away for a weekend, probably to Cape Cod. Apparently there was little enthusiasm, so--I heard later--someone said, "Ask Janice. She's always got a bag packed." Funny thing was I never thought of myself that way. Sometime later, I read Shirley MacLaine's autobiography (one of them...). In it she expressed a desire to always to enough money to go wherever she wants, whenever she wants. It became one of my mantras. Another was a preference "to do, rather than have." These days, I travel as often as I can; usually that's from NH to Mass, return, on weekends. Most recently (2009), I spent a month in Morocco one week. (It was that good!) This blog started in 2007, during a 7-month period in Xiangshang, in southern China, where, through Maryknoll, I taught English and then traveled solo for about 11 days. I add to this column as time and miles allow. Not included: a solo round the world in the 1980s, and dozens of junkets since then. |
