Introduction Panamint Joe is the Anglo nickname of one Joe Stuart, a Shoshone Indian native of the Belted Range and denizen of the Panamint Range, just west of Death Valley, California, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Panamint Joe died of food poisoning from uncooked ham in June 1909, while he and his wife Maggie were guiding two would-be mining investors and their wives across Death Valley.
