Introduction | I was born in historic Dubuque, Iowa to a large, close-knit family, which included 46 first cousins. I was the oldest of five daughters. My ancestors from Luxembourg, Germany, and Austria were in Dubuque nearly one hundred years before me. I attended the private girls' academy that my grandmothers, great-aunts, aunts, cousins, and sisters attended and am still friends with grade school classmates. After briefly contemplating joining the convent, I left home for good to attend nursing school in Rochester, Minnesota. I married and continued my education at the University of Pittsburgh and St. Louis University and with my infant daughter, eventually followed my sister and cousin to Seattle in the 70s. I live with my husband, a retired UW professor, near Green Lake. There, we raised our blended family of four children, three of whom live with their families nearby and the fourth, in northern California. |
