About me

Location Miami Beach, Florida, United States
Introduction Yes, I am a real ordained rabbi. I was ordained by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1989. I have never worked in a congregation, though I led services as a Hillel director. I even lived a pretty religiously observant life for about five years. I speak fluent Hebrew. I have visited Israel more than 30 times. I am worried about the secular democratic future of that country and the rise of Hareidi political power. I support a two-state solution, but not at the expense of Israel's security. I work at a JCC with people from many backgrounds which has contributed to my humanistic position. I am a member of the Association of Humanistic Rabbis and the Society for Humanistic Judaism. I also belong to the American Humanist Association and am a supporter of the Center for Inquiry. I believe in the centrality of ceremony and ritual in human life, but I also believe that it must be de-coupled from the supernatural. I believe that the scientific method is the only way to understand ourselves and reality. I believe that dogmatic religion is one of the most destructive forces in the world and that we humans need to create non-theistic alternatives to it.
