You've got to make contact with the alien leader. How will you tell when the conversation is finished?
Well, I suppose it's obvious if one side cuts off contact or moves away from the discussion. If possible, I'd define signals for things like "your turn" or "that's the end of the conversation" before doing anything else. What that signal would be depends on whether the conversation is by electronic transmission (i.e. radio/video) or in person, and if in person on the anatomy of the participants.
