Introduction I am the Chief Risk Officer for the $110 billion pension and endowment of the University of California, and the author of The End of Theory (Princeton, 2017) and A Demon of Our Own Design (Wiley, 2007). My last job was working as a research principal at the Office of Financial Research, and I also was Senior Policy Adviser to the Financial Stability Oversight Council and Senior Policy Adviser at the SEC. Before my stint in the public sector, I worked at Bridgewater Associates, ran the Quantitative Equity Fund at FrontPoint Partners and was in charge of risk management at Moore Capital. In the investment banking arena, I was in charge of firm-wide risk at Salomon Brothers. I also spent ten years at Morgan Stanley, first designing derivatives, doing proprietary trading, and than as the firm's first market risk manager. I received a Ph.D. in economics from MIT.
