Introduction As an Engineers Without Borders Junior Fellow, I am working in the Dedza region in Malawi, Africa from May until August. I hope that I'll be able to share my life in Malawi over the next 4 months with anyone who is interested. I am living in a fairly remote, rural community in Dedza with a wonderful, loving family of 22 people, spanning 5 generations. I sleep on a mat and help my sister fetch water (or at least I try!) daily; I always seem to be on the tip of a new and humbling learning curve! Join me on my journey, working with one of the Water & Sanitation NGOs in Malawi, as I do my best to conduct a qualitative and quantitative assessment of their new Monitoring & Evaluation System. This M&E system - which seeks to monitor and evaluate the impact on health indicators of individuals and communities - involves many stakeholders, including the Water & Sanitation facilitators, Village Health & Water Committees, and government extension workers (Health Surveillance Assistants), and local health clinics. My hope is that, while learning from the people I meet and experiencing Malawi's vibrant culture, I'll perhaps make a small difference too.
