Introduction Denise Felton’s collages and greeting cards combine needle and paper arts in unusual ways. They also give her an excuse to spend endless hours cruising eBay for antique books and photos, broken jewelry, old radio tubes, and other cultural flotsam. Denise’s artistic vision is expressed in the philosophy, “Put some stuff together and see what happens.” Her work is often sarcastic and sometimes just plain silly. Her mother is probably pretty embarrassed about the whole thing. Denise lives in a small house in Maumelle, Arkansas, that tilts slightly to one side due to the weight of trash she categorizes rather than throwing away because it might be useful in a collage some day. Her garage is full of dryer lint donated by friends who heard she uses it to make handcrafted paper. As a member of the Art YaYas—a small crafting sisterhood that focuses on art experimentation and extreme potlucking—she proudly wears the Princess Deer-in-the-Headlights plastic tiara. In Little Rock, you can see Denise’s work in person at River Market Books and Gifts in the Cox Creative Center.
